Super Nova of The Month: Kris Smith
Congratulations to Kris Smith,
Our June 2026 SuperNova!

Think your peak fitness years are behind you once you hit your 50s? Think again.
Meet Kris, a Nova member who recently compared his current fitness stats to his results from 14 years ago and completely blew his younger self out of the water.
From conquering chronic back pain to chasing down his wife’s "SuperNova" award record, Kris is proof that with the right routine, habits and commitment, your 50s can be your strongest decade yet.
👉 Read on to hear about Kris’s journey and his approach to health and fitness.

Mindset & Motivation
What are some of the biggest mindset shifts or perspective changes you’ve made over the past year that have transformed the way you approach your health and fitness?
"Moving from my 40’s to my 50’s has caused me to take a much more purposeful approach to my fitness. I have always been active, but now focus much more on core and flexibility….something that the Nova trainers have really helped me with."
What’s your biggest motivator to live a strong and healthy lifestyle? Why does the work you put in at Nova matter to you?
"The two biggest motivators for me to live a strong and healthy lifestyle are my family and making sure that I can live an active lifestyle for many years to come. And putting the work in at Nova is a part of helping me do that."
Training & Progress
What does your current training and activity routine look like in and out of Nova and why does this routine work for you?
"I upped the Nova tempo in 2026 and try to get in three workouts a week focused on core, mobility and strength. In addition to working out at Nova I try to keep active, with mountain biking and hiking in the summer (and a few rounds of bad golf!) and skiing in the winter. I also got a Peloton bike, which I find to be a great cardio workout."
How does it make you feel seeing the results you’ve achieved in your annual fitness testing?
"Most years when I do my annual physical I also do some fitness testing….push ups, VO2 max testing, flexibility tests, etc. This year for fun I compared my results to my first fitness test 14 years ago and I beat them by more than a little bit! I am in better fitness in my 50’s than I was in my 40’s, and a part of that is the work that I put in with Nova."

Lifestyle Changes & Challenges
How has your relationship with food changed over the past few year? What has been the hardest nutritional component to sustain?
"My nutrition has improved over the years due primarily to my wife, Sandra, who places a huge focus on healthy eating and making sure we get our vitamins and minerals. She is a vegetarian, which means that I am a lot of the time as well, but she always makes sure that protein is in every meal. I still “cheat” quite a bit, but my eating habits are miles ahead of where they were years ago thanks to Sandra."
What specific routines, habits or ‘hacks’ do you think have contributed the most to your success? For example, is there a specific nutrition, recovery or stress management plan that you feel has really worked for you?
"The biggest “hack” for me in maintaining my fitness is the discipline of my scheduled Nova session. I have found over the years that it helps to have the accountability of a scheduled session to make sure I stay on track."

Future Focus
How has sticking to your health and fitness plan benefited your life? For example, has being more healthy or more fit allowed you to do new things that you could not before or has it positively impacted the lives of others you care about?
"I think the greatest benefit of staying more healthy and fit is that it contributes to feeling better about myself and my general health, and allows me to do all the activities that are important to me. Years ago I struggled with a bad back which would flare up and keep me from doing things. Those back pains have not happened for years now, and I attribute that to the work I am doing to build and maintain my core and flexibility."
Do you have any new health and fitness goals for 2026?
"Just keeping it up! I have been really pleased with my progress and don’t want to lose any of it. And maybe earn another SuperNova award in the future…..
Sandra
has three, so she has set the bar for me."
